March 2003 - JOHNSON MOVES INTO LEFT SEAT AT CESSNA
Longtime Cessna employee Charlie Johnson this week took over responsibilities for all of the company's operations from Chairman
Russ Meyer. Johnson will continue as president of the Wichita manufacturer--a position he has held since 1997. Meyer, who has been
running the company on a day-to-day basis for the last year, will continue to work on various marketing efforts. In an interview with
"AOPA ePilot" yesterday, Johnson said the company, like other manufacturers, continues to face difficult economic times. "We
don't see a turnaround anytime soon in the economy. With the uncertainty that exists now it continues to be extremely tight. As
you well know the potential of possibly going to war has caused people to be very conservative. I don't see any tremendous opportunity
for upside until well into next year," he said. Nonetheless, Cessna plans on delivering 220 Citations, 50 Caravans, and 540 single-engine
airplanes this year. Johnson described the single-engine business as steady and likely to increase if the economy improves. Johnson
reiterated Cessna's intent to stay in the single-engine business. "We have zero intention of ever getting out of the single-engine
business. There are none of us on the management team that are anything less than 100 percent committed to that program and continuing to
grow it in the future." He said that the company is evaluating new ideas and concepts for the single-engine line, but is not yet ready
to disclose those.
